“Who Are You”, composed by Pete Townshend, was the title track on English rock band The Who’s 1978 release, “Who Are You”, the last album released before drummer Keith Moon’s death in September 1978. The song became one of the band’s biggest U.S. hits, peaking at #14. The lyrics begin with a true incident, courtesy of Townsend’s alcoholism. He claims he really did wake “up in a SoHo doorway”, and a police man recognized him and advised him to go home. It is the theme to the CBS TV show “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”. “Who Are You” was the eighth studio album by The Who, released on 18 August 1978, through Polydor Records in the United Kingdom and MCA Records in the United States. It peaked at number 2 on the U.S. charts and number 6 on the U.K. charts. It was The Who’s last album with Keith Moon as the drummer, who died of a drug overdose approximately three weeks after the release of this album. The Who were formed in 1964 by Roger Daltrey (vocals), Pete Townshend (guitar), John Entwistle (bass) and Keith Moon (drums). They became known for energetic live performances which often included instrument destruction. The Who have sold about 100 million records and have charted 27 top forty singles in the United Kingdom and United States with 17 top ten albums, with 18 Gold, 12 Platinum and 5 Multi-Platinum album awards in the United States alone. The Who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, their first year of eligibility. They received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 1988, and from the Grammy Foundation in 2001, for creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. In 2008 surviving members Townshend and Daltrey were honoured at the 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors.
